Top 10 Reasons to Study Geography

  1. To understand basic physical systems that affect everyday life (e.g. earth-sun relationships, water cycles, wind and ocean currents).
  2. To learn the location of places and the physical and cultural characteristics of those places in order to function more effectively in our increasingly interdependent world.
  3. To understand the geography of past times and how geography has played important roles in the evolution of people, their ideas, places and environments.
  4. To develop a mental map of your community, province or territory, country and the world so that you can understand the “where” of places and events.
  5. To explain how the processes of human and physical systems have arranged and sometimes changed the surface of the Earth.
  6. To understand the spatial organization of society and see order in what often appears to be random scattering of people and places.
  7. To recognize spatial distributions at all scales — local and worldwide — in order to understand the complex connectivity of people and places.
  8. To be able to make sensible judgements about matters involving relationships between the physical environment and society.
  9. To appreciate Earth as the homeland of humankind and provide insight for wise management decisions about how the planet’s resources should be used.
  10. To understand global interdependence and to become a better global citizen

  1. I´m agree with the reason to study geography because is interesting the reason that include for help the natural resource , the relationship... but why doesn´t the people make judgements about roads, because they make roads and they are destroying the environment , the relief, the animals that live in the place...Why doesn´t the people vote to decide if are in agreement or not..But I´m thinking of study geographic because I have intrigue... This is interesting and important.

  2. I do agree with second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. I do not agree with the first one because I don't think that Geography can affect our daily lifes, because with this advanced technology we have today, we have all what we need near our houses. And about the eighth one, I don't think people that is not invovled with teaching Geography do care about the physicl environment because, as I said before we have all near our houses, no matter there are mountains, hollows or valleys. Now, about the ninth one, we do not may know it, but we all appreciate that we live in the bottom of our hearts. I am not trying to get emotional or something but I think that's the hidden truth. And about the tenth one, I don't think the environment can affect our attitude. People that live in mountains can have more or less knowledge than city people do, but, most of us try to be good persons, tho there are exceptions.

    1. I'm agree with you in most of the terms only that I'm disagree with the number one and the number nine. Because physucal systems can affect our everyday life, imagine if there was a hurricane tomorrow, it wouldn't affect us? or if it doesn't rain in months, what would happen?. So this is my opinion. In the other point I'm nor agree with you is the ninth one because through geography we can appreciate how thanks to fossil fuels we are where we are, in a planet that is getting worse, and geography can help us to use natural resources better, with judgement.

    2. Are you sure? Do you think that due to the modern technology we don´t need the Geography...? For instance, according to your opinion specilists in earthquakes wouldn´t be necessary...

    3. It already stops raining for months here, so nothing would happen. And yes, I'm totally sure. Of course we need Geography, but, as I already said, technology can do specilists in earthquakes' job. But we always have to know that a machine cannot replace a human.

  3. I´m agree with points number one, two and three, because it's true that we must learn things about where we live and other places in the world. I think it´s important to know about these terms, they can be useful in the future...

  4. I also agree with point 5 because I think it´s necessary to know the ways we are changing (sometimes destroying :/)the Earth until it will be as we like...But I wouldn´t like to see what are we doing to our planet. ._.

  5. I´m agree on the reason number 2, because it is true that we know places and their characteristics, because as involved in our everyday life depends on us because we know the more we know and be more independent. The number 7 I comment to attention in the world because very few people are interested in things that go on space and space escalada as they believe that this is a very complex issue, yet it is important to interest and that helps us to know and understand the connectivity to and between us people. The number 10 becomes me a comment some reason, because to be a better citizen regarding global interdependence is not easy, I do not agree with that because that means that we are all around that issue because society is as united and together we can change only to influence the world as a whole.

  6. I'm agree with most of the points excepting the eigth and the last one. The eighth one because in my opinion it isn't the function of study geography, I associate more the term of geoghraphy with the rest of the terms, such as the second or the fifth and not with make judgements about environment and society. Talking about the tenth one I'm completely disagree because study geography won't make you a better citizen or something similar, it depends on you and your way of look at life. Looking the answers of my partners I have to say that I'm very much in agree with the comments they made, especially with the first who answered.

  7. I agree with the first point because I like the facts of the daily life; I agree with the point two because it is necessary to know something of the position and the culture of the different countries; the third party and the fifth point, to know the part of the geography in the history and also its changes is interesting for my; the point four does not seem to be important because we have the ways of seeing maps, ways or positions; the sixth one and the seventh point, they are necessary, but the sixth one is more important; the eighth one does not seem to me interesting and the ninth and tenth points, they are very important but I think that they are difficult to obtain since the knowledge of the geography only.

  8. One of the reasons for which we have to study geography is principally to have a little idea of the world in which we live. I'm agree with the points number one, two and three.
The most important point is the number one because we have to know the world we live in , if one day there is an earthquake we have to know how to act and circumstances.
The point number three is also very important, our ancestors are very important for us since they invented things we use today and investigated important things , also made discoveries like the discovery of America by Columbus in 1492.
I'm desagree wih the las point because however much you study do not have to be a citizen uen , unfortunately there are many citizens who do not care for the earth and at the end we will all pay for it.
